There is no single global ranking that can establish the most-watched genre across cinemas and every streaming service in 2026. Available data point in different directions: animation and drama each took the largest share of UK box office in the first half, while Netflix’s half-year movie list included action thrillers, animation and romantic comedies. These are signals from different markets and metrics, not a universal ranking.

What the figures measure

Box-office gross is money, not the number of people who attended: ticket prices, premium formats and time in theaters all matter. Admissions count tickets or visits as defined by the source. Netflix uses “views” for hours watched divided by a title’s runtime; they are not unique viewers counted one by one. We therefore do not put pounds, admissions, hours and views on one scale.

Genres overlap. A film can be both action and science fiction; animation is a production technique and can combine with adventure or comedy. For BFI data we use the primary genre assigned by Rentrak. Netflix describes titles with genre tags, but its movie top ten is not a complete genre ranking.

Bar chart: among the ten highest-grossing releases in the UK and Ireland in the first half of 2026, primary genres were drama three; animation and action two each; horror, comedy and family one each.

What stood out in cinemas

The British Film Institute’s official report records 66.7 million admissions and £552.5 million in UK box office from January to June 2026. Both rose on H1 2025. The BFI assigns animation and drama a 20% share each of UK box office for that period, and horror 10%. This describes the UK market, not the world.

The BFI limits this exclusion to sections 3 and 4: theatrical releases of Netflix-produced films are absent from Rentrak-reported release gross and release counts. Do not confuse those tables with section 2, which records UK admissions and box office for all titles showing during H1, including event cinema and films released earlier.

Among the ten highest-grossing releases in the combined UK–Republic of Ireland market, the report counts three dramas, two animations, two action titles, and one each for horror, comedy and family, using Rentrak primary genres. Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie illustrate animation’s presence; Project Hail Mary blends science fiction and adventure. This is a top-ten sample, not all releases or a global share.

Michael led the BFI table with £53.0 million. The report attributes that gross to H1 releases in the UK–Ireland market. It cannot be compared directly with Netflix titles: one is theatrical revenue in pounds and the others are calculated views on a global platform.

The same report says its ten titles represented 57% of Rentrak-reported release gross in that territory and period. That percentage describes revenue concentration among the ten films, not genre share. The list also excludes home viewing and cannot estimate unique viewers.

Sequels, adaptations and familiar properties also appear among standout titles. The BFI counted four franchise, sequel, remake or video-game-IP titles in the H1 2026 top ten, compared with eight in H1 2025. That is a difference between two samples, not evidence that franchises are generally losing appeal.

What Netflix viewing shows

Netflix’s global January–June report recorded more than 97 billion hours watched across all of its content, including series and films. That total is not movie-only. In its most-watched movies list for the half, War Machine had 146.9 million views, The Rip 136.1 million, Swapped 130.8 million, KPop Demon Hunters 130.4 million and Apex 129 million.

Netflix said its action slate did particularly well, citing The Rip, Apex and Thrash. It also highlighted animation through Swapped and romantic comedy through Office Romance. KPop Demon Hunters, released in 2025, remained among the most-viewed movies in H1 2026: release year and viewing period are different. This describes Netflix and that half-year, not all streaming.

Trends the data can support

  • Action and thriller: prominent in Netflix’s half-year list, with three action/action-thriller titles cited by the service. This does not mean global box-office leadership.
  • Animation: notable both in BFI’s reported UK box-office share and among Netflix movies. It is not synonymous with children’s content.
  • Drama and horror: drama shared 20% of UK box office with animation; horror had 10% in that market in H1. These shares use Rentrak primary genres.
  • Romance and romantic comedy: Netflix highlighted Office Romance and People We Meet on Vacation; these examples do not prove the genre beats theatrical romance.
  • Science fiction, fantasy and adaptations: they can overlap with adventure, drama or action. A few films cannot establish genre share without consistent classification.

Four titles, four readings

  • Toy Story 5: animation; £42.4 million in the BFI UK–Ireland release chart through 12 July. This is territory-specific box office, not worldwide attendance.
  • Project Hail Mary: science fiction/adventure; £34.7 million in the same BFI chart. Genre can be hybrid, and gross does not measure profitability.
  • Obsession: horror; £18.2 million in the BFI chart. It shows the genre among notable releases, not net profit or the performance of all horror.
  • War Machine: military thriller; 146.9 million Netflix views in H1. This measures viewing activity on the service, not unique viewers.

How to read a ranking

  • Which territory, period and platform does it cover?
  • Does it measure revenue, admissions, hours or views?
  • Does it include releases from that year or everything watched in the period?
  • Does it cover the whole market or only a selection?
  • Who assigns genres, and can labels overlap?
  • Is the figure provisional or subject to revision?

The BFI reports admissions for all films on release in the UK separately from gross for films released in H1 across the UK and Ireland; those measures should not be confused. Its calendar listed Q3 2026 figures for 10 November, after our cut-off.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which genre is succeeding in 2026? There is no comparable global winner. In UK H1 box office, animation and drama each had a 20% share; on Netflix, action, animation and romantic comedy stood out among featured films.
  • Is the highest-grossing movie the most watched? Not necessarily: revenue depends on ticket prices and admissions.
  • Does Netflix represent all streaming? No. Its figures cover the service and the methodology Netflix publishes.
  • Do views mean unique viewers? No; they are hours divided by runtime.
  • Can the picture change? Yes. 2026 is not over, and theatrical grosses continue to accumulate.

The cautious reading is that 2026 sends different signals depending on where and how we measure: animation and drama in UK first-half box office; action, animation and romantic comedy among Netflix’s featured movies. Comparing them can raise useful questions, but it cannot identify one genre as the most popular with every viewer.
