Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li: the film's core trio
The official synopsis describes Ryu and Ken as estranged fighters who are drawn together again when Chun-Li recruits them for the next tournament. Paramount/Skydance's production feature calls them former friends and training partners: Ryu has stepped away from fighting, while Ken has taken a different path. Chun-Li brings them back into the action. In the games, all three are signature characters; the film tells its own story and should not be mistaken for a scene-by-scene adaptation of one specific game. M. Bison, Akuma and other rivals
Paramount presents M. Bison as the tournament's organizer and describes him as ruthless. In the games, he leads Shadaloo, an antagonistic organization. Akuma, played by Joe Anoa'i (Roman Reigns), is another prominent fighter in the cast; the cast page confirms the role but does not reveal his place in the plot. Balrog adds a boxer known for his association with Shadaloo in Capcom's fiction. These are franchise connections, not spoilers about the 2026 ending.

The other fighters and characters
The ensemble combines recognizable names from Capcom's roster with roles whose movie backstories have not yet been explained in official cast material. Blanka, Dhalsim, Guile, Zangief, E. Honda, Vega and Cammy are established game characters; Dan Hibiki and Juli also come from the series. Paramount additionally confirms Don Sauvage, Joe and Marvin for the film. Their names alone are not a reason to infer motivations or narrative importance.

What comes from the games, and what the film adds
Capcom released the first Street Fighter in 1987; Street Fighter II followed in 1991 and helped make Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li familiar to arcade players. The games bring together fighters with distinctive styles and moves. For this film, Paramount and Legendary are working with Capcom and set the story in 1993. The fighters' names come from the franchise, but the tournament, relationships and plot form a new adaptation. Capcom also documents Don Sauvage in its official Street Fighter V Character Guide as a supporting figure associated with the CWA and event hosting. Eric André is confirmed as the film's Don Sauvage, but the casting credit does not establish whether the film uses that game biography. Marvin is named in the official film cast; the sources checked do not detail his background. Capcom on the film · Capcom game character material. The names here follow the film’s international cast list. In the Japanese version of Street Fighter II, the boxer, the clawed fighter and the dictator are named M. Bison, Balrog and Vega, respectively; Capcom’s official manual distinguishes the Japanese and English names.
How it differs from Street Fighter (1994)
Universal's 1994 film centred its story on Guile, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, and his mission against General M. Bison, played by Raul Julia. The 2026 film's official synopsis instead puts Ryu and Ken alongside Chun-Li and around a world tournament. That is a difference in focus and cast; viewers do not need to know the 1994 film to follow the new one. Universal's 1994 film page.
Direction and production
Kitao Sakurai directs and co-writes the film. Paramount Pictures and Legendary Pictures present it in association with Capcom; the Japanese company said it is co-financing the project with Legendary. The production feature says Sakurai travelled to Osaka and worked with game director Takayuki Nakayama to balance respect for the franchise with a distinct film story.
